The most important thing to consider when choosing to repair or replace your AC unit is how long you’ve had it. If your AC unit has been in use for over twenty years, replace it.
If it’s been in use for around fifteen years, you can probably get a few more years out of it if it’s been properly maintained. If not, it’s around this period where we see replacements become necessary.
Now, replacing an entire AC unit is no small task. You must carefully consider if it’s the right decision for you.
Air Conditioning Warning Signs:
- Dust and Humidity If you’re noticing an excessive amount of dust accumulating around your home and air vents, it may be a sign that your AC is no longer efficient. The same goes for humidity. The air is humid enough in Houston as it is. You don’t need your AC adding to it.
- Smells Unpleasant odors from your AC unit can come from dust or mold burning around the condenser coils and electrical parts of your AC. Not only does this smell bad, but it’s potentially harmful. A bad smell may be a sign that it’s time to replace.
- High Energy Bills and Constant HVAC Repairs If you’ve had several HVAC repairs or tune-ups and regular maintenance checks without seeing a decrease in your energy bill, it may be time to replace the unit. Your system may be too old to operate without regular repairs.
